In Organon of Medicine, Samuel Hahnemann explains a fundamental principle of Homoeopathy — Similia Similibus Curentur (Let likes be cured by likes).
Aphorisms 43–51 describe what happens when two similar diseases meet in the same organism.
I. Basic Principle
Condition:
When an organism is suffering from a natural disease, and another stronger and similar disease attacks it.
Effect:
- Two similar diseases:
- Do not repel each other
- Do not suspend each other
- Do not coexist together
- Do not form a complex disease
Instead, the stronger similar disease annihilates (destroys) the weaker one.
II. Explanation of the Process
- The stronger disease is similar in symptoms.
- It affects exactly the same parts of the organism as the weaker disease.
- Since the same tissues are already occupied by the stronger force:
- The weaker disease can no longer act.
- It becomes extinguished.
- The vital force is now influenced only temporarily by the stronger disease.
- After its action is completed, recovery follows.
This is the natural law of cure.
III. Examples Given by Hahnemann
Hahnemann supported this law with clinical observations:
Smallpox
Smallpox has cured conditions like:
- Ophthalmia
- Amaurosis
- Deafness
- Dyspnea
- Swelling of testicles
- Dysentery
- Cow-pox
Cow-pox
Cowpox cured:
- Swollen half-paralyzed arm
- Intermittent fever
Measles
Measles:
- Prevented Whooping cough
- Cured chronic herpetic eruptions
- Cured miliary rash
These examples prove that a stronger similar disease removes a weaker one naturally.
IV. Natural Similar Diseases vs Artificial Medicinal Similar Diseases
A. Natural Similar Diseases
🔹 Very few natural diseases can act as remedies.
🔹 They are often dangerous and life-threatening.
🔹 The secondary disease itself may require treatment.
🔹 Their intensity cannot be controlled.
🔹 Hence, natural cure by similar disease is:
- Uncertain
- Risky
- Dangerous
B. Artificial Medicinal Similar Diseases (Homoeopathic Medicines)
This is the great discovery of Hahnemann.
Advantages:
- Thousands of homoeopathic medicines are available.
- They produce artificial diseases similar to natural ones.
- Their strength can be controlled by dose and potency.
- After completing their action, they disappear spontaneously.
- Cure is:
- Gentle
- Rapid
- Permanent
- Harmless
The medicinal disease must be:
- Similar in symptoms
- Slightly stronger than the natural disease
This ensures true homoeopathic cure.
