Dynamis / Dynamic Power (Footnote to §11 of Organon)

In the philosophy of Homoeopathy i.e organon of Medicine, one of the most profound concepts introduced by Samuel Hahnemann in the Organon of Medicine is Dynamis or Dynamic Power. This idea, especially explained in the footnote to Aphorism 11, forms the foundation of understanding disease, vital force, and the action of homoeopathic remedies.

For BHMS students and practitioners, especially those preparing Organon for university exams, this topic is not only philosophical but also highly viva-oriented.

What is Dynamis?

The word Dynamis is derived from the Greek term meaning power, force, or energy.

In homoeopathic philosophy, Dynamis refers to the action of one substance upon another without any visible, material, or mechanical connection, producing effects through pure, specific, immaterial energy.

In simple terms:

It is an invisible, non-material influence that produces observable effects.

We cannot see this energy, weigh it, or measure it directly. We understand it only by its results.

Examples of Dynamic Power

Hahnemann used practical illustrations to make this concept clear.

1. Earth and Moon

The Earth carries the Moon in its orbit, and the Moon influences tides (high and low tides).
There is no visible rope, chain, or mechanical device connecting them.

Yet the effect is real.

This is dynamic action, not mechanical action.

2. Magnet and Iron

When a magnet attracts a piece of iron:

  • There is no hook.
  • No lever.
  • No visible pulling mechanism.

Yet the iron moves toward the magnet.

The magnet also communicates magnetic power to a steel needle without physical machinery.

This invisible, immaterial influence is dynamic.

3. Nausea by Sight

If a person sees something extremely disgusting and immediately feels nausea or vomiting:

  • No emetic medicine was given.
  • No physical substance entered the stomach.

The effect occurred through dynamic influence on the vital force, resulting in anti-peristaltic movement.

Dynamis in Relation to Vital Force

According to Hahnemann, the Vital Force is dynamic in nature.

He describes it as:

  • Spiritual
  • Immaterial
  • Without mass, shape, or form
  • Not directly perceptible by senses

We understand its existence only through:

  • Sensations
  • Functions
  • Harmony of organs
  • Maintenance of life

The vital force:

  • Keeps the organism in harmonious balance.
  • Maintains coordination between organs and systems.
  • Governs sensations and functions.
  • Sustains life.

Dynamis, Disease and Cure

This is the most important conceptual application for exams.

1. Disease is Dynamic

Since the vital force itself is dynamic, it cannot be disturbed mechanically.

Disease occurs when:

  • External inimical influences (dynamic in nature) disturb the vital force.
  • The disturbance happens at the energetic level.
  • Symptoms appear as outward manifestations of internal dynamic derangement.

Thus, disease is not primarily material — it is dynamic.

2. Cure Must Also Be Dynamic

If disease is dynamic, cure cannot be mechanical or material.

Therefore:

  • Only dynamic medicinal power can correct dynamic disturbance.
  • Homoeopathic medicines act dynamically upon the vital force.
  • They do not act chemically or mechanically in the curative sense.

3. Every Medicine Has Specific Dynamic Energy

Each medicine possesses:

  • A unique energy.
  • A specific mode of action.
  • A peculiar influence on human well-being.

No two medicines act exactly alike.

For example:

  • One medicine may affect the mind predominantly.
  • Another may influence the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Another may disturb circulation.

Each has its own dynamic signature.

4. Potentization and Increased Dynamic Power

One of Hahnemann’s most revolutionary ideas was that:

The smallest dose of a properly dynamized medicine contains greater healing power than large crude doses.

Through potentization:

  • The material quantity decreases.
  • The dynamic energy is enhanced.
  • The medicinal force becomes more subtle and penetrating.

Thus, a highly potentized remedy can produce profound curative effects that crude substances in large doses cannot achieve.
